Capablanca

アーティスト／プロデューサー／DJである Hugo Capablanca は、自らを「永遠のディレッタント（好事家）」と呼ぶのが好きだ。それには理由がある。反逆者であり、アウトサイダーでありながら、10年以上にわたりベルリン・アンダーグラウンドの中心に存在してきた彼は、現在リスボンに拠点を移している。RA（Resident Advisor）は彼を「自らのコズミックなルールに従ってプレイするアンダーグラウンド音楽のヒーロー」と評したことがあり、それは的を射ているかもしれない。

これまでCapablancaは世界中をツアーし、もっとも尊敬を集めるDJブースに立ってきた（ベルリンのPanorama BarからトビリシのBassiani、東京のVent、ニューヨークのPublic Recordsまで）。そしてDJ Harvey、Tom Of England、Andrew Weatherall、Optimoといったレジェンドたちと共演してきた。しかし、それでも彼の名前はいまだに「知る人ぞ知る（IYKYK）」存在にとどまっている。

彼のDJセット、スタジオ作品、そしてライブパフォーマンスは
――自身の名義であれ、Marc Piñolとのプロジェクト C.P.I. であれ
――きわめて独特のサイケデリックなエネルギーを放ち、異なる音楽スタイルやジャンルを自在に融合させて驚きに満ちたダイナミクスを生み出す。スタイルを一元化しようとする姿勢を徹底的に拒むその姿勢は、彼が15年以上にわたって運営してきたレーベル Ediciones & Discos Capablanca にも如実に表れている。

Artist, producer and DJ Hugo Capablanca likes to call himself an “eternal dilettante”, for a reason. A rebel, an outsider, but also a mainstay of the Berlin underground for well over a decade —now relocated to Lisbon— Hugo has been recently
described by RA as an “underground music hero playing by his own cosmic rules”, and there might be quite some truth to
that.

Over the years Capablanca has extensively toured worldwide, graced the most revered DJ booths (from Panorama bar in Berlin to Bassiani in Tbilisi, Vent in Tokyo, or Public Records in NY), and shared stage with legends like DJ Harvey, Tom Of
England, Andrew Weatherall, and Optimo, to name a few, yet his name remains somehow a bit of an IYKYK thing.

His DJ sets, studio productions and live performances
—be it under his own name or together with Marc Piñol as C.P.I.
—reflect a very distinctive psychedelic energy, fusing rather diverse sonic styles and genres that generate surprising
dynamics. This frontal rejection of stylistic reductionism is also perfectly reflected in Ediciones & Discos Capablanca, the
record labels he’s been curating for over 15 years.
